  • Yamaha SB-2 Bass Guitar 1966 Nippon-Gakki

SOLD 11/18! 1966 is the first year Yamaha started producing basses and this is an early example with serial number 0887. A lot of the features on this particular bass hint that it may have been a prototype including the mahogany pickguard (with heavy white lacquer!), the wood-encased pickups and the volume/tone controls with on/off toggles for each pickup. All of these I have seen are 3-knob models with volume/volume/tone. Also, the volume and tone controls work in reverse which is really cool once you get used to it. Factory white finish on a mahogany body with (2) single coil pickups with amazing tonal variation. It actually has the same character as the BB1000 which would be introduced many years later. The neck appears to be mahogany with a lacquered rosewood fretboard with some finish wear in spots. It is a very fast neck and easy to play. The neck pickup is kind of close to the end of the fretboard so it's not the ultimate slap-style bass but there's still some access. The tuners are way cool and heavy-duty and are surprisingly precise. The tiny Yamaha logo on the headstock is smaller than a dime and it really cracks me up. I'm kind of enjoying this one right now so I haven't priced it yet but I'm always listening to offers or even just information on such an early one.
